Chengdu Week 28 - Latern Festival and life resumed
Mar. 1, 2015
I woke up and was surprisingly not sore. A little stiff, but once I got up and moving everything was fine. Most of the day was just hanging out and doing a few errands that needed to get done. At night though, the entire apartment went out to meet Andrew (USAC intern) for Korean BBQ. It was really fun, and a lot of meat. So much food, I haven’t been that full in a really long time. We chatted with Andrew’s girlfriend and sister, and ate for a couple of hours. We got to do all the cooking, Andrew wants to take us to Chengdu style BBQ next time. Apparently it is cheaper and more food (I will probably burst if I had to too eat more food). Then it was off to the large lantern festival in a park on the east side of Chengdu. It was an interesting experience, lots of lights and strange art. It’s the largest lateen display in the city, so it was incredibly packed. Also this day is the last day before people really have to get back to work so people were living it up. It was fun but we stayed in the park too late. We made it to the center of the city but we missed the last train to the closest metro station. We had to taxi back, and to be totally honest it was about the same price. I got some awesome pictures of the lights, please enjoy. So begins a week of work a school.

Today was a full day. First I had class in the morning, which went well. The cafeteria is once again open and the campus is alive with students. Due to the lack of Christian holidays, the winter break is typically over February, though it changes from year to year depending on the lunar calendar (similar to how Easter works). To be honest I had forgotten how loud the city is, but it’s back and horns are going again. It’s not bad though, just different. After class I had a little bit of time to relax but a new class has started. I am going to be taking the Chinese language proficiency test (HSK) at the end of April. USAC provides a class that helps you get ready for said exam, however, it is a three hour class from 2:30 to 5:30. It’s with my regular teacher as well, so I see Yin Laoshi for six hours every Monday until the end of term. I have a long way to go but I am confident that I will pass at least level four (around 1200 words). If I try really hard for the summer, right before I leave, I may be able to pass level five (if I can learn over 2500 words). I am hopeful. Tomorrow I start once more, it should be fun going. Life is getting back to normal.

Classes and Work are in full swing again. I had forgotten how hectic my life actually is. I’ve been enjoying the break but it’s time to get back to the grind stone. I think I will be ok though. Going back to work it’s pretty much like I never left. The kids, however seem to have forgotten all their english. It makes sense though, simply because they never get to use english other than a hello to a passing foreigner. So we are in review right now, which bores the children out of their minds because even though they don’t remember the words they know we have done this before. I think it will all work out once everyone gets back into their routines for school and daily life. Classes are going though oddly this weekend I don’t have too much homework. I will use the time to really bust out my HSK study and get started in on that. I suspect this weekend will be pretty low key other than for the trip to Jinsha Museum. Into the weekend we go!
