Chengdu Week 36 - Sports Day and Trveling to the Bamboo Sea 蜀南竹海

White for Dancer, Pink for Marching
Apr. 17, 2015

Hello!! My goodness it’s been a while since we’ve done this. Sorry about the silence, but I have been extremely busy. Today was Sports Day at my University. Now what is sports day? Sports Day is when all the colleges at the University get together and compete in various track and field events. But before they have the competition, there is a parade and an opportunity to dance. On the way to Emei Shan I had volunteered to do the dance (I also volunteered Jesse against his will). I also somehow managed to become the leader of this dance. So the last few weeks my free time has been filled with organizing the dance. The credit for thinking up the dance goes to my classmate Evalie, she was able to come up something simple yet interesting to look at. Today we were the first to preform a dance, the crowd sounded crazy, watching us foreigners dance. It was all quite fun and over way too quickly. Then we stood on the field watching the other colleges go. It took a long while but finally we finished with all the performances. Suddenly the teachers started herding us back onto the track, they kept saying something about a run. Then suddenly as a University, every team went for a run, it was pretty interesting. I was wearing all the wrong clothes for something like that but we managed to have a good time. We ended up yelling a bunch of encouragement in Chinese to convince the people in front of us not to stop running. We finished the run laughing, which was a beautiful thing. Then we loaded back up on to buses and headed back to the university.

Getting ready to have a solidarity campus run

Here’s where the story changes gears, Jesse and I have been planning for a while a trip out to the Bamboo Sea. So when we returned from Sports day we packed up our gear and headed to the bus station. We got on a bus around 15:30, and to be honest it was one of the longer bus rides I have taken. There was also a point where we weren’t entirely sure as to where we were, or if we were going to get off at the right stop. Then there was point where the told us to get off the bus and we transferred to this little car. The lady driving just took us into the park and to her hotel. They fed us a little bit of food and then we were off to bed. Jesse and I both passed out fairly quickly.
