Day 48 -- July 11

Well today was a case of happy accidents. I walked to the bus stop and was stopped by a lady who was very concerned about the state of my legs. This still happens time to time as the bites are still healing. She gave me more medicine, which is sweet but I really don’t need it. Then she got a little bit too helpful and insisted i take a different bus than the one I always take. I tried to tell her that I needed to take 74 but after a failed communication I ended up on 278. It goes by Shida road but not by the university, so I would have about a 5-10 minute walk after that depending on crowd density. But what was funny is the bus driver was just yelling out random things and the bus stop signal played “It’s a Small World.” I was laughing the whole way there, the absurdity of everything sent me into giggling fits. Then as I was walking down the Shida, 74 rolled up to the stop I get off at. So I lost no time between stops and had an awesome memory.

Breakfast was also an interesting oops, somehow orders got mixed up and I ended up with something that was similar to what I usually get but not what I payed for. This happens sometimes, not a big deal so I just ate it without complaints. As I was getting up to leave and the lady who runs the kitchen grabs me. She starts asking rapid fire questions in, I think, Mandarin her accent was pretty epically Taiwanese so who knows. Eventually it was communicated that I had been given the wrong order but I didn’t say anything because I didn’t know what to say in Mandarin. She then started asking for 20 more NT and I thought it was the difference between meals. I paid, then she told me to wait. I did, now confused what was going on, she comes back out a minute later with a bag of packaged food. She had given me my original meal as a take away. I essentially got two meals for about a buck fifty USD, happy accidents indeed.

Class was a good time, tomorrow we will not have class. This actually works in everyones favor, incase you are unaware there is a major typhoon going to hit Taiwan tomorrow. This storm is the going to be fairly strong, I am essentially going to be trapped in the dorms for the weekend. Lots of studying and practicing my Mandarin. I was assigned a project for class so I’ll get started on that as well. I’m going to try to sneak out Friday morning and find a cafe before I get confined to the dorms. I will of course take recordings of the insane about of wind and rain and give ya’ll a taste of what it is like. I will be going to bed soon, but not setting my alarm, oh happy days!
